There’s hope for quilting in the fine art world.

In May this year Sarah Contos won the Ramsay Art Prize, she won $100,000 with her 21st Century Quilt titled “The Long Kiss Goodbye”. So a few months ago Bernina asked me to be one of 5 kiwis chosen to represent Bernina New Zealand in a global challenge. The challenge was called The Bernina International Community Project 2015 and involved 5 countries; South Africa, India, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand. 5 people from each country were chosen. I am often asked what fabrics I prefer for my art quilts or what my stash contains.

 

For art quilts I use:

 

  • sometimes batiks as they make great skies and slightly textured looking backgrounds, they are a blank canvas for threads but without looking flat (and they don’t fray)

  • fabrics I can easily use for pavements, buildings, grassy lawn, floors and walls etc
